What happens when you call a Medicare agent, step by step
A Medicare call is a conversation, not a sales script. The agent asks about your doctors and medicines, compares plans available where you live, and you decide whether to enroll now, later or not at all.
The call, in order
- The agent confirms what you want to talk about, such as comparing plans, and asks your permission to discuss it.
- They ask for your ZIP code, because plans are offered by county.
- They go through your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions, one by one.
- They show the plans that fit and explain the costs: premium, deductible, copays and the yearly limit.
- You decide. If you enroll, the agent completes the application with you. If not, you hang up with nothing owed.
How long it takes
Most plan reviews take a short phone call. It takes longer when you take many medicines or want to compare several plans, and shorter if you only need one question answered.
Have this ready when you call
- Your Medicare card
- Your medicine list
- Your doctors' names
- Your current plan's card, if any
Common questions
Do I have to enroll on the first call?
No. You can compare, hang up and think it over. During the Annual Enrollment Period, which ends December 7, give yourself enough time to call back before the deadline.
Does the call cost me anything?
No. There is no charge to talk to us. Any plan you choose has its own premium, set by the plan and shown before you enroll.
