Talking to an agent

Is it free to talk to an insurance agent, and how do agents get paid?

Yes, talking to an agent is free. When you enroll in a plan, the insurance company pays the agent a commission, and that is built into how plans are priced. The plan costs the same whether you enroll through an agent or on your own.

What that means for you

You are not billed by the agent. Any premium you pay goes to the insurer. For Medicare and ACA plans, commissions are set by the insurer and the rules around them, and they do not change what you pay.

It does mean an agent is paid when you enroll. A good agent will still tell you when the better answer is to keep what you have, and you are always free to hang up and compare.
