Medicare
What happens to my prescriptions when my Medicare plan ends?
If your Medicare Advantage plan includes drug coverage and the plan ends, that drug coverage ends with it. Join a new drug plan so you are covered on January 1, because going without can bring a penalty.
Avoiding a gap
- Choose a new Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, or a stand-alone drug plan if you go to Original Medicare.
- Check that every medicine you take is on the new plan's drug list.
- Make sure the new plan starts the day the old one ends.
The late penalty
If you go 63 days or more without drug coverage that is at least as good as the standard coverage, a late enrollment penalty can be added to your premium for as long as you have Part D.

Common questions
Does the penalty apply after a plan ends on its own?
A plan ending is a reason you get a special window to join a new plan. Join promptly and ask about your situation.
Can I get my prescriptions in the meantime?
Ask your pharmacy and your doctor before the end date. They can help with timing refills.
