Medicare
My Medicare Advantage plan is ending. What do I do?
Read the notice, then pick a new plan or Original Medicare before your coverage ends on December 31. You have the regular enrollment period through December 7, plus a special window after your plan ends.
What to do, in order
- Find the written notice from your plan. Plans that are not renewing are required to send it by early October.
- Note the date your coverage ends, usually December 31.
- Between October 15 and December 7, choose a new Medicare Advantage plan or a drug plan to start January 1.
- If you miss that, a special enrollment period for people whose plan ended generally runs from December 8 through the end of February.
If you do nothing
When a plan ends and you choose nothing, you are generally returned to Original Medicare on January 1. That does not include drug coverage, so you would be without a drug plan until you join one, and a late penalty can apply.
Have this ready when you call
- The notice your plan sent
- Your Medicare card
- A list of your doctors and medicines
- The date your coverage ends
Common questions
Is my coverage ending for sure?
Only your plan's notice can say. Our plan-changes pages show what CMS's public lists show for your state and company, which is a place to start, not a notice about you.
Can I keep my doctors?
Only if they are in the network of the plan you choose next. Check each doctor by name.
