The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: spreading out drug costs
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your out-of-pocket drug costs into monthly payments over the rest of the year. It does not lower what you owe. It changes when you pay it.
Who it helps
It is most useful if you take a high-cost drug and a single pharmacy bill is hard to pay at once. Joining is your choice and is arranged through your drug plan.
Things to know
- It is optional, and you can opt in or out through your plan.
- You pay your plan monthly instead of paying the pharmacy up front.
- If you leave your plan, ask what happens to any amount you still owe.
Have this ready when you call
- Your drug plan's member card
- Your medicine list
- Your recent pharmacy costs
Common questions
Do I have to use it?
No. It is optional.
Will it lower my total cost?
No, it spreads the cost across months. A plan that covers your medicines at lower cost is a different question.
