Talking to an agent
How to check that an insurance agent is licensed
Ask for the agent's full name and license number, then look it up on your state's department of insurance website. A licensed agent will not mind.
Steps
- Ask for their full name and license number or National Producer Number.
- Search for your state's department of insurance and use its agent lookup.
- Check that the license is active, and that it covers the product, such as health or life.
- Check that the name on the license matches the name you were given.
Warning signs
Be wary of anyone who will not give a name or license number, who contacts you uninvited about Medicare, or who asks for payment by gift card or wire. You can report problems to your state's department of insurance.

Common questions
Can I check a Medicare agent too?
Yes. Medicare agents hold state licenses just like other agents.
Is a license the same as being endorsed by the insurer?
No. Agents are also appointed by each insurer they sell for. Ask which companies they represent.
