Talking to an agent
A one-page checklist for any insurance call
Have your basics in front of you, write down the agent's name, ask what you will pay and when, and do not leave without knowing the next step and the deadline.
Before the call
- Your ZIP code, date of birth and household members.
- Current coverage and card.
- Doctors, hospital and medicines with doses.
- Your questions, written down.
During and after
- Write down the agent's name and license number.
- Ask for the total cost, not just the monthly premium.
- Ask what happens if you change your mind.
- Ask for confirmation in writing, and keep it.
Have this ready when you call
- Pen and paper
- Your documents
- Your questions
Common questions
Should I record the call?
Taking notes is always fine. For recording, check your state's rules and ask the agent first.
What if I forget something?
Call back. You do not have to get everything done in one call.
