Medicare
Will I lose my doctor if my Medicare plan changes?
You keep a doctor only if that doctor is in the network of the plan you end up in. Check each doctor by name before you choose, and again after you enroll.
How to check
- Look up each doctor, specialist and hospital by name in the new plan's directory.
- Ask the doctor's office which Medicare plans they accept.
- Check the pharmacy too, since some plans charge less at certain pharmacies.
If a doctor is not covered
You can pick a plan that does include the doctor, or consider Original Medicare, which works with any doctor that accepts it. If you are in the middle of treatment, ask the plan about continuing care before you switch.
Have this ready when you call
- Each doctor's full name and city
- The hospital you use
- Your current plan's card
Common questions
Is a doctor listed in a directory guaranteed to take the plan?
Directories can be out of date. Call the doctor's office to confirm before you enroll.
Can I change plans if my doctor leaves the network?
Sometimes, through a special enrollment period. Otherwise you may have to wait for open enrollment.
