Turning 65 in 2027: when to enroll in Medicare

Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues three months after. Signing up in the first three months means coverage can start the month you turn 65.

Why not to wait

Missing the window can mean a late penalty on Part B for as long as you have it, unless you have coverage from current work that lets you delay. If you are still working, ask how your employer plan works with Medicare first.

Common questions

Do I need to sign up if I get Social Security?

If you already receive Social Security retirement benefits, you are generally enrolled in Parts A and B automatically at 65. If not, you sign up yourself.

What if my birthday is on the first of the month?

Medicare counts it as the month before, so your window shifts by one month. Ask to confirm your dates.
