The Medigap open enrollment window: the one time you cannot be turned down
Your Medigap open enrollment period lasts six months, starting the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During it, insurers cannot turn you down or charge you more because of your health.
Why it is important
After that window, in most states, a supplement insurer can ask health questions and decline you or charge more. Some states have extra protections, and there are a few other situations where you have the right to buy a policy.
That is why the timing of Part B and your supplement matter together.
What to compare
- The plan letter, such as Plan G or Plan N, which defines the benefits and is the same across insurers.
- The monthly premium, which differs by insurer.
- How the insurer raises premiums over time.
- Whether the plan is open to you during this window.
Have this ready when you call
- The date your Part B starts
- Your date of birth
- Your ZIP code
- Your current coverage
Common questions
Can I use the window if I am already on Medicare Advantage?
The window is tied to when you first have Part B. Switching later may involve health questions, so ask about your situation.
What if I miss the window?
You may still be able to buy a supplement, but you may be asked health questions. Ask an agent about the rules in your state.
