Medicare
Using Medicare when you travel, or when you live in two states
Original Medicare works with any doctor in the country that accepts it. A Medicare Advantage plan follows its network, with emergencies and urgent care covered anywhere, so check how a plan handles care away from home. Most care outside the United States is not covered by Original Medicare.
Within the United States
- Original Medicare: see any provider in any state that accepts Medicare.
- Advantage plan: in-network care, with emergency and urgent care covered anywhere in the country.
- Ask any Advantage plan how it covers routine care if you spend months away.
Outside the United States
Original Medicare generally does not pay for care abroad. Some Medigap plans include limited emergency coverage for trips outside the country. Travel medical insurance is another option for longer trips.

Common questions
Can I keep my plan if I spend winters in another state?
Your plan goes by your permanent address, and some plans have time limits for being away. Ask your plan.
What if I move for good?
Moving out of your plan's area opens a special enrollment period to choose a new plan.
