Moving? What happens to your Medicare plan and when you can change it
If you move out of your plan's service area, you generally get a special window to choose a new plan. The window is limited, and some moves require you to act before you go.
What a move can change
- Medicare Advantage and drug plans are offered by county, so a new county can mean different plans.
- A move within the same county may not change your plan.
- Original Medicare follows you anywhere in the country, but a supplement and a drug plan may need review.
How to time it
Tell your plan your new address, and ask when your window starts and ends. For a move out of your plan's area, the window can begin before you move, so it is worth asking early.
Have this ready when you call
- Your old and new addresses
- The date you are moving
- Your current plan card
- Your doctors in the new area, if you know them
Common questions
What if I keep a second home?
Your plan goes by your permanent address, and part-time residents need to check how the plan covers care away from home.
Can I keep my doctors after a move?
Only if they are in a network available where you now live. Check each by name.
