Medicare Savings Programs: help paying Medicare premiums
Medicare Savings Programs are run by your state's Medicaid agency and can pay your Part B premium, and for some people deductibles and coinsurance, if your income and resources are low. They also qualify you for Extra Help automatically.
The programs
- Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): can pay Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.
- Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): can pay the Part B premium.
- Qualifying Individual (QI): can pay the Part B premium, with limited funding.
How to apply
Apply through your state Medicaid agency. Income and resource limits vary by state and change each year, so ask what the current limits are before assuming you do not qualify.

Common questions
Does it change which plan I should choose?
It can. If a program pays your cost-sharing, a plan with a premium you do not need may not make sense. Ask before you choose.
Do I lose it if I move?
Rules differ by state, so tell the new state's Medicaid agency.
