Extra Help with Medicare drug costs: who qualifies
Extra Help, also called the Low-Income Subsidy, helps pay Part D premiums, deductibles and copays for people with limited income and resources. You apply through Social Security, and some people qualify automatically.
Who may qualify
- People with limited income and resources, with limits set each year.
- People who get full Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, or help from a Medicare Savings Program, who generally qualify automatically.
- People who need to apply, through Social Security.
Why it matters in the fall
If you get Extra Help, you can change drug plans more often than other people can. A plan that is good for the year can look different once the help is counted, so check your plan each fall.
Have this ready when you call
- Your income and resource information
- Your Medicare card
- Your current drug plan
Common questions
Does Extra Help change each year?
Yes. The limits and the benefit amounts are updated each year, so check the current figures.
Does my home count as a resource?
Generally the home you live in and one car do not. Ask for the current rules.
