Medicare
Part D drug plan or an Advantage plan with drug coverage?
With Original Medicare you add a stand-alone Part D drug plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage inside the plan. Either way, check each medicine against the plan's drug list and pharmacy network.
The two routes
- Original Medicare plus a stand-alone drug plan, often with a supplement.
- Medicare Advantage with drug coverage included, which means one plan to manage.
- An Advantage plan without drug coverage means you generally cannot add a separate drug plan, with limited exceptions.
What to compare
Which drugs are on the list and in which tier, the deductible, and whether your pharmacy is preferred. Because each plan's list differs, the same medicine can cost very different amounts.

Common questions
Can I have two drug plans?
No. Having more than one is not allowed, and joining a new one generally ends the old.
What if I take no medicines?
Many people still join a basic plan to avoid a late penalty if they need drugs later.
