Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31
People in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one change between January 1 and March 31: switch to a different Advantage plan, or leave for Original Medicare and add a drug plan. You cannot use it to join a plan if you are on Original Medicare.
What you can do
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan.
- Return to Original Medicare and join a stand-alone drug plan.
- Make one change in that period, so choose with care.
When the change starts
A change made in this period generally takes effect the first of the month after the new plan gets your request.

Common questions
Is this the same as open enrollment in the fall?
No. The fall period runs October 15 to December 7 for everyone. This one is an extra, single change for people already in an Advantage plan.
Can I go from Original Medicare to an Advantage plan now?
No. This period is only for people already in an Advantage plan.
