Medicare
Can I change my Medicare plan any time of year?
Usually not. You can change during the fall enrollment period (October 15 to December 7), during the January to March Advantage window if you have an Advantage plan, and during a special enrollment period if something qualifies you.
The windows
- October 15 to December 7: change plans for January 1.
- January 1 to March 31: one change, if you are in an Advantage plan.
- Special enrollment periods: for events like moving, losing coverage, or your plan ending.
- Your first enrollment period when you become eligible.
What can qualify you for a special period
- Moving out of your plan's area.
- Your plan ending or leaving your county.
- Losing employer or retiree coverage.
- Qualifying for extra help with costs, in some cases.

Common questions
What if I just do not like my plan?
That is not usually a reason for a special period. Use the fall enrollment period or the January to March window if you qualify.
How do I know if I qualify for a special period?
Describe your situation to a licensed agent or your plan. It depends on the details.
