Moving? A move can open a special enrollment period
A move to a new ZIP code or county that has different plans generally opens a 60-day special enrollment period. Moving only within the same area usually does not.
How it usually works
- You generally need to have had coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with some exceptions.
- Update your address with the marketplace when you move.
- The new plan generally starts the first of the month after you choose it.
Why people check
A new area can mean different plans, prices and doctors. Even if you stay with the same insurer, your plan options may change.
Have this ready when you call
- Your move date
- Your new address and ZIP code
- Proof of the move, if asked
Common questions
Does a move to another state qualify?
Generally yes, since plans are offered by state. You would apply in the new state.
What if I moved a while ago?
The window is measured from the move date, so act quickly and ask if you are past it.
