Marriage, a baby or an adoption: special enrollment for health insurance
Getting married, having a baby or adopting generally opens a 60-day special enrollment period to add coverage or change plans.
How each works
- Marriage: 60 days from the wedding, with coverage generally starting the first of the month after you choose a plan.
- Birth or adoption: 60 days, and coverage can start on the date of the birth or adoption.
- Update your income and household size so your savings match.
Do it early
Add a newborn promptly, since care in the first weeks is when claims happen. Keep the birth certificate or marriage certificate in case the marketplace asks.
Have this ready when you call
- The date of the event

Common questions
Do I have to switch plans?
You can usually add the new person to your plan or choose a new plan together.
Will my savings change?
Probably. Your household size and income change, and so can the amount you qualify for.
