You shop the same Marketplace as everyone else
There's no special self-employed insurance product -- self-employed and gig workers use the same ACA Marketplace as any individual buyer. What changes is how you estimate your income for subsidy purposes.
Why income estimation matters more when it's variable
Your premium tax credit is based on your estimated annual income, then reconciled against your actual income when you file taxes. If your self-employment income swings significantly during the year, your estimate can end up materially off -- worth reviewing with an agent rather than guessing once and forgetting about it.
- Net self-employment income (after business deductions) is what counts toward MAGI
- A significant income change during the year can be reported to adjust your subsidy
- Reconciliation happens at tax time -- a big gap between estimate and actual can mean owing money back
