Part B penalty questions

How long does the Part B penalty last?

Generally for as long as you have Medicare Part B -- it's added to your premium every month, not a one-time fee. That's what makes catching a missed enrollment window early so valuable.

Does having employer coverage protect me from the penalty?

Active employer group health coverage (typically from an employer with 20 or more employees) can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period with no penalty, as long as you enroll within its window after that coverage ends. COBRA and retiree coverage generally do not count as creditable for this purpose.

Is this the exact amount I'll be charged?

No -- this is an educational estimate using the 2026 standard Part B premium and published penalty rules. Social Security determines your actual penalty based on your specific enrollment history, and some beneficiaries pay an income-adjusted premium (IRMAA) on top of any penalty.
