Medicare enrollment timing questions
I'm still working at 65 with employer coverage -- do I need to sign up for Medicare now?
It depends mainly on your employer's size. If your employer has 20 or more employees, you can generally delay Medicare without a late penalty while you have that coverage. If it has fewer than 20, Medicare typically becomes primary and you usually should enroll. A licensed agent can review your specific plan and employer size with you.
What happens if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period?
You may be able to use Medicare's General Enrollment Period (January 1 - March 31 each year) or, if you had employer coverage, the 8-month Special Enrollment Period calculated here. Missing all of these can mean a lifetime late-enrollment penalty on Part B.
Why did Medicare coverage start dates change in 2023?
Before 2023, enrolling in the later months of your Initial Enrollment Period could delay your coverage start by up to 3 months. Since January 1, 2023, coverage generally starts the first day of the month after you sign up, no matter which month of your window you enroll in.
Does this tool make a final eligibility or enrollment decision?
No. It's an educational estimate based on published Medicare rules. Your actual enrollment window and effective date are confirmed through Medicare or Social Security, generally with a licensed agent's help.
