Medicare
What does Medicare Part B cover, and what do you pay?
Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab tests and medical equipment. You pay a monthly premium, a yearly deductible, and generally 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for most services, with no yearly limit unless you add other coverage.
What it covers
- Doctor and specialist visits, and outpatient surgery.
- Preventive services such as many screenings and vaccines.
- Lab tests, X-rays and other diagnostic services.
- Durable medical equipment such as walkers.
What you pay
The premium is set each year and is higher for people with higher incomes. After the deductible, you generally pay 20 percent of the approved amount. Because there is no yearly cap on that 20 percent, many people add a Medigap policy or choose a Medicare Advantage plan with a yearly limit.

Common questions
Is Part B optional?
Yes, but if you delay without other qualifying coverage you can face a late penalty for as long as you have Part B.
Does Part B cover prescriptions?
Only some drugs given in a doctor's office or hospital outpatient setting. Everyday prescriptions are covered by Part D.
