Medicare Advantage extras: dental, vision, hearing and over-the-counter cards
Extra benefits can be useful, but they come with limits: yearly dollar caps, specific networks, and rules about how and where you use them. They also change from year to year.
What to ask about each extra
- What is the yearly dollar limit, and how does it reset?
- Is my dentist, eye doctor or hearing provider in the network?
- How do I use an over-the-counter card, and what does it cover?
- Do I need to pay up front and send in a claim?
- Will the benefit be the same next year?
Do not choose on extras alone
A generous extra benefit does not help if your doctors are not in the plan or your medicines are not covered. Check those first, then compare the extras.
Have this ready when you call
- Your dentist and eye doctor's names
- Your hearing provider, if any
- Your medicine list
- Your current plan's benefits summary
Common questions
Does Original Medicare cover dental and vision?
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental, vision or hearing care. Some Advantage plans include some of it.
Can I keep my dentist?
Only if they are in the plan's network. Check by name.
