A life insurance check-up: five questions to ask every few years
A policy you bought years ago may no longer fit. Ask whether anything in your life has changed: marriage, children, a new home, a new job, a divorce or retirement.
The five questions
- Has my family grown or shrunk?
- Have my debts, such as a mortgage, changed?
- Does my coverage last as long as people depend on me?
- Are my beneficiaries still correct?
- Does my policy still make sense for my budget?
What to do with the answers
If the answers have changed, compare your current policy with options available now. Do not cancel an existing policy before a new one is in force.

Common questions
Should I replace my policy?
Not necessarily. Compare first, and never cancel before a new policy starts.
Can I add coverage without losing my old policy?
Yes. Many people layer policies.
