Do I have to pay back my ACA tax credit? How reconciliation works
Yes, it is possible. Advance savings are an estimate, and your tax return settles the difference. If your actual income was higher than the estimate you may owe some back, and if it was lower you may get more.
How it settles
You file Form 8962 with your tax return. It compares the savings paid on your behalf during the year with the savings you were eligible for based on your real income. The difference is either added to your refund or reduces it.
Ways to avoid a surprise
- Update your Marketplace application when your income or household changes.
- Keep your Form 1095-A from the Marketplace. You need it to file.
- If you report a lower income than you expect to earn, plan for the possible repayment.
- Ask a tax professional about repayment limits for your income level, because the rules have changed over time.
Have this ready when you call
- Your Form 1095-A
- Your income records
- Your last tax return
- Any changes in your household during the year
Common questions
What if I do not file a tax return?
People who get advance savings are generally required to file so the savings can be reconciled. Not filing can affect your ability to get savings in future years.
Is a Form 1095-A the same as a 1095-B or 1095-C?
No. The 1095-A comes from the Marketplace. The others come from insurers and employers.
