ACA auto-renewal: why staying in your plan can cost you
If you do not choose a new plan, your Marketplace plan generally renews on its own. But prices, networks, drug lists and your own savings can change from one year to the next, so renewing without a look can cost you.
What can change
- The premium, which can rise, especially after savings are recalculated.
- Your doctors' network status and the list of covered drugs.
- Your savings, if your income or household information is out of date.
- The plan itself, which can be discontinued and replaced by a different one.
A fall checklist
Update your application with your current income and household, look at the renewal notice, check your doctors and medicines against it, and compare it with other plans where you live.
Have this ready when you call
- Your renewal notice
- Updated income estimate
- Your doctors and medicines
- Your current plan card
